South Carolina state law makes it mandatory to carry liability insurance on your automobile. You need to have at least $15,000/$30,000 of coverage for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage. You also need to carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Changes in South Carolina Auto Insurance

Some significant changes took effect in South Carolina Auto Insurance law on March 1, 1999. The new law has set up different types of coverage for drivers of different skill levels. Earlier, all drivers had to pay a recoupment fee. The new law began the process of eliminating this fee permanently. It also abolished the South Carolina Reinsurance Facility. Insurers now do not need to write the liability insurance coverage of every South Carolina driver's automobile. They can decide themselves about whether to sell insurance to a driver depending upon the risk associated with him and his automobile. The new South Carolina Auto Insurance law makes it mandatory for all owners to keep proof of automobile liability insurance or financial responsibility in their vehicles all the times. This provision aims at reducing the number of uninsured drivers on the roads.

Protection under the new South Carolina Auto Insurance law

The new insurance law provides cover to the public against discrimination and other unfair practices while purchasing and renewing automobile insurance coverage. It states that insurers or agents cannot refuse to issue or renew an automobile insurance policy depending on an individual's religion, color, national origin, income level, age, sex etc.
